Document 02

This policy describes how Eluminate Labs (“we,” “us”) handles information when you use the FlySmash mobile app (also called Lantern Fly Track & Smash).

FlySmash is a citizen-science app for reporting spotted lanternfly sightings and smash counts across the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. It is not legal advice. Questions: info@eluminatelabs.com.

01

Who is responsible

Eluminate Labs operates FlySmash. For privacy questions or requests, email info@eluminatelabs.com.

02

Information we collect

Account

If you sign in, we store:

  • Email address (used only for magic-link sign-in and optional community/product email)
  • A unique user ID
  • An optional public alias (display name you choose)
  • Account created/updated times

We do not use passwords. There is no Google, Apple, or other social sign-in in the current app.

Sighting reports

When you log a smash, we store:

  • Pin coordinates (lat / lng) that you placed on the map
  • Smash count and life stage (egg, nymph, or adult)
  • Time of the report
  • State (two-letter USPS code), derived on our servers from those coordinates
  • Borough, derived on our servers only if the pin is in New York City (state = NY); otherwise borough is empty
  • An internal user ID linking the report to your account (not shown on the map)

Reports outside the 50 states and DC are rejected.

Guest use

You can open the map without an account. You may drop a pin and log a smash on the device. Those guest reports stay on your phone until you sign in, then they are uploaded to your account. Community map pins, server totals, and leaderboards require sign-in.

Community email

If you create an account, we may send community or product email (for example a welcome note or dispatch) to the address you used to sign in. You can reply to those messages or email us to be removed from that list.

03

Location

Location is required for the product. We do not track you in the background or when the app is closed. We request when-in-use / foreground location only. There is no “always allow” / background location permission.

We access your device GPS only while the app is open, and only to:

  1. Center the map on you if you grant permission (and optionally when you tap Use my location to drop a pin where you are standing).
  2. Confirm a smash — when you submit a report, we read a current GPS fix and require that you are within about 200 meters of the pin. If location is denied or you are too far from the pin, the smash is not submitted.

We store the pin coordinates you submitted, not a trail of your movements. We do not store the GPS reading used only to check that you were near the pin, except insofar as the pin itself is saved.

04

How we use information

We use this information to:

  • Show a community map of confirmed sightings
  • Compute totals and leaderboards (global aliases, US states, and local NYC boroughs when a pin is in New York City)
  • Keep your stats on your account
  • Send optional community/product email
  • Operate, secure, and improve the app

We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.

05

What other people see

Map

Signed-in users see confirmed pins with:

  • Location
  • Smash count and life stage
  • Report time
  • Server-derived state (and borough when the pin is in New York City)

Pins do not show your alias, email, or user ID.

Leaderboards (signed-in only)

  • Global: rank, alias (or “Anonymous”), total smashes
  • NYC boroughs: aggregated smash and report counts per borough — no names
  • By state: aggregated smash and report counts per state — no names

Email and user ID are not shown on leaderboards.

07

Retention and deletion

Data is stored in our Supabase project. You can sign out from the app drawer.

You can Delete My Account in the app drawer. That removes your login and profile. Confirmed sighting pins may remain on the community map without your identity (the report is detached from your account so public smash counts stay accurate). Email info@eluminatelabs.com if you want help with a deletion request.

08

Children

FlySmash is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have, contact us and we will delete it.

09

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information, or to object to certain uses. Email info@eluminatelabs.com. You can also delete your account in the app as described above.

10

Changes

We may update this policy when the app changes. The “Last updated” date at the top will change. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
